The oldest city in the U.S. has a wealth history everywhere you turn..
History
This is the oldest city in the United States, and it has the paperwork to prove it. St. Augustine was founded in 1565 by Pedro Menendez, only 52 years after Ponce de Leon discovered Florida. The place is jammed with archaeological sites, historical reenactments, museums and specialty shops all with traditional Spanish flair.
Features
Tours are available by train, trolley, horse-drawn carriage or river cruise. It's free to just walk through town, but most of the attractions cost a little something. Thankfully, the very best are the ones that cost the least. If you make the trip, you have to visit the Castillo de San Marcos and check out the cannons, the jail and that strange material that makes up most of the buildings here--it's called coquina or tabby, a concrete made of sand and seashells.
Jacksonville?. Getting pretty bad when Jacksonville doesn't have an attraction to win the "big one"..... but I would agree that St. Augustine is a lot nicer to visit.
City of History. St. Augustine has something for everyone. Words can not describe the feeling you get just from walking through the city and fort. If you like History OR shopping, this is the place for you!
Love St Augustine--beware tourist traps.
Overall, St Aug is a magical place. I never tire of seeing the fort or the old schoolhouse. The beach is beautiful and the shopping is fun. A few hints on some places I've visited (being a Jacksonville native I'm here often):
*the kids can run off some energy at a playground w/ a classic carousel ($1/ride)
*ripley's believe or not museum--becoming a tourist trap but still fun
*whatever you do--do not waste your money on the "3-D motion picture & fabulous fountains" exhibit across from ripley's--just trust me on this!
* the old schoolhouse hasn't changed in 20 years--but it's still worth revisiting
*there's a new playground behind ripley's--check it out
*make sure to bypass the restaurants in the touristy area and take a trip down the red lion bridge to the gypsy cab co. restaurant--worth the trip from jax anytime!
fun filled. St. Augustine is the best way to get away. Its so beautiful the scenary is so rich and full of culture. I used to go there almost every weekend until I moved away.
I LOVE it here!!!. I moved to Jacksonville Beach 10 years ago and have take regular trips to St. Augustine just about every weekend. Walking along St. George Street and hanging out at The Mill Top listening to the folk singers on a sunny Sunday are just about the best things in the world. There is so much to do and experience there it's almost unreal. If you enjoy crafts and the like you will definitely not be disappointed. Jewelry? TONS!! Try Casa Rodriguez on St. George. p.s. Awesome Ghost Tour
History, variety, charm. Great place to spend the day, learn about the city's rich past, choose from a wide range of dining experiences, places to stay, walk, sight-see, shop. St. Augustine has got it all.
time machine.
Step back into the 1500's and view life as it used to be. This well maintained town of Spanish origin gives added understanding to the cultural beginnings of the USA. It is a trip back in time that lets us glimpse our ancestors and their spirit of adventure and pioneering. Thank God he sent them here.
Rate sheet does not apply to city.
Plenty to do. Dine, Shop, take a boat ride, rent Jet Skis, have drinks on the water. Something for everyone.
Wealth of History. There is so much history in St. Augustine. The Old Fort, the oldest school, the beautiful Potters Wax Museum. There is the charm of the hose and buggy rides. The Foutain of Youth is also here. There is so much to know about Florida and the Spanish history here. This is a must do if visiting this area of FLorida. Oh and did I mention also Very Romantic??
