30.313594 -81.680790The Carrot Dog is delicious and the phone number is 904-738-7999. The Carrot Dog has gotten better as well as the homemade ice cream which is used to make the Scribes Cafe coffee al a mode. My date and I had heard about this cafe and when we visited Jacksonville last week we rode a trolley from the downtown area to 5 Points in historic Riverside and there at 820 Lomas Street was this small cozy cafe named Scribes Cafe. We felt like we had gone to Europe when we enterd and the person behind the counter, Tabitha Quattlebaum, was very pleasant and well spoken. She presented us with a wonderful looking and quite delicious carrot dog dish which I definitly felt the need to write about it. We stayed at Scribes Cafe for about two hours enjoying the setting which surprided me as the people coming in were from the age groups of teenagers to senior citizens. Very different to me yet very comfortable. The owner, Jazmon Lovenguth was making her sow ice cream during our visit and she too was very pleasant and made us feel very much at home. It felt really nice to be in a Ma and Pa old fashioned cafe compared to a corporate place. Just felt I should pass the word. Bye.
some of the best vegetarian food I ever tasted. Try there yucca dish. It is awesome. Also, the tofu is delicious....doesn't taste slimy like most.
Follow fresh vegetable concoctions with heart-stopping desserts at Jacksonville's only all-vegetarian cafe..
The Scene
In the back of an eclectic art gallery in the heart of the artsy Five Points District is Jacksonville's only vegetarian restaurant, Heartworks. With mismatched chairs, kooky paintings and shelves cluttered with figurines, it's a throwback to 1960s Haight-Ashbury (without any bad side effects).
The Food
Chef/owner Elaine Wheeler creates vegetable stir-fries, a spicy tofu sandwich, veggie burritos and daily specials that capitalize on seasonal ingredients.
Dish to Die For
Before you get too cocky about being healthy and meatless, have a look at the dessert case. The cheesecake, the chocolate cake and the chocolate chip cookies are killer.
Eatery or Gallery?. That was my first thought upon entering this unassuming restaurant in a commercial district in 5 points. After eating an excellent meal, I decided it is a bit of both. There are numerous works of art and other "found" objects decorating the interior of Heartworks, all of which are for sale. The food is quite varied in its origins from southwestern cuisine to down home vegetarian fare. The corn fritters were amazing. If you are a vegetarian or are dining with one or are just interested in something a little different, this place is perfect.
