Not The Good Ole Pig Anymore. Use to be the best BBQ in town. The ribs would melt in your mouth. Not so anymore. Yesterday I took a friend there to order take out. Had promised it was the best you could get in Jax. Man was I made a liar! The ribs were tough. Nothing even close to the fall of the bone I had remembered all these years. The baked beans might have been right out of a can with a bit of bell pepper. At least the coleslaw was the same as I loved it. The cook was not happy that we did not want sauce on the ribs but on the side as we had asked for. When he put the sauce on the ribs anyway.,he got mad and slung them back on the counter the second time.Noticed how sparse the dinning room was. Sure sign this PIG has gone downhill.
I go for the service as much as food.
I go to the pig on Normandy blvd. on a pretty regular basis-once or twice a week. I love their inexpensive breakfast that looks like I'd love to make at home, but without me doing the work.
Like all restaurants, servers change sometimes, and some are great, while some, you can tell are "in transition" between their career field jobs. However, one smiling server has been there for a few years now, Pam. I never have to worry about ANYTHING, she's on top of things, and always smiling.
I think I'll go have a BBq baked potato now!
The Perfect Storm of Poor Service and Bad Food.
This was my first and last trip to the Pig. My friend had eaten there years before and was glowing about it. My first impression as I drove up was, local joint, probably great BBQ. As I walked in I was not impressed. The place is filthy, the all the seat cushions have tears in them and there isn't room to turn around without bumping into yourself.
The hostess was welcoming and pleasant.
Still, my friend assured me that I would love the BBQ. I ordered the AYCE Ribs, beans and fries, while he went for the AYCE Chicken. We split a pitcher of Bud, obligatory for a good southern BBQ.
The waitress we got was surly. When the food came she all but dropped it on the table, muttered something, probably "enjoy" and left without another word.
I looked down at the ribs and they had no sauce or seasoning on them. There is a bottle of the house sauce, a weak mustard based sauce, that I put on the first rib. It was awful, the first bite was charred on the outside, dry on the inside and the sauce was pitiful. I swear I almost gagged. I did find some ribs that were somewhat more done to my taste but ate them without the sauce. The beans were nasty, one bite and they weren't touched again. I believe they were generic pork and beans with some house spice in them.
The waitress avoided us like the plague but were we able to get one of the other waitresses to get her attention and get her to come to the table, three different times.
Thank God for the pitcher of Bud to wash the taste of that awful food out of our mouths. I can't remember ever not enjoying BBQ before.
You've been warned
Love this place. I don't think that I ever ate the food from here, but I use to buy the sauce by the gallon. I lived in Jacksonville for 4 years when I was in the military and my neighbor use to buy this sauce all the time and have cook outs two or three times a week. I wish I could get it up here. I wish that the guy who said that he knows how to make it earlier would repost the proper proportions of the ingredients.
Okay BBq boiled then grilled. I have been eating at the pig for over 30 year's.I know their sercet sauce recipe. It's white vinager, salt, mustard wet yellow kind lol.chili powder, thyme and black pepper.you need a small bottle of the pig sauce to get the right color and texture.the sercet is you need to balance all of the ingredients.i was given this recipe 20 years ago from a worker at their old edgewood lemturner location which has since shut down enjoy.
best bbq ever!!!. If I could, I would start a Pig restaurant here in Las Vegas!!!! They have the best most unique sauce ever. There is no place even close out here and I bring home bottles of sauce every time I go out to FL. I even have my family bring it to me when they come!! I want my PIG!!!!!
Best BBQ around. Whoever wrote that the pig needs to watch out for hidden extras, first of all needs to learn how to spell. Second of all, the Pig is the best hole in the wall you'll ever find! I really think anyone who is reading this that has not been to the pig before should def. go!
(Not recomened). Watch for the hidden extras That are not explaned on the menu.(Like extra for dark meat and for you sides.)Customer service needs lots of improvement.Go to Sonny's instead, better customer service and no surprises.
User review by goddessfootball. Best ribs I have ever had!! Great sauce!! They sell it by the pint, quart and gallon!!
