Enjoyed it.. I found the value to be rather good. My family enjoyed our dinner. The fish; we had blackened and grilled were cooked perfectly. We did not have the crab, they had been out since 6PM, but we were happy with our selections. We will go back again.
Very, very good.. My hubby and I and another couple went there last night and had a very good dinner. Good food and a reasonable price. Highly recommend the gumbo and mushrooms for appetizers. The crab cakes were very good although not the jumbo lump, but then they were not $30 either, $17 I think with sides. Hubby had half dozen blue crabs, devoured them. Our friends had blackened fish and crab pasta. They were very pleased too. Will definitely go back many times.
This 'Crab Connoisseur' says 'Just Okay'.
Hey now, all you MD connoisseurs don't have the market cornered on crab. Let me present a 'fair and balanced' review, having been raised in Florida but spending over a decade in MD. Yes, Floridians love their blue crab claws, and just because some hotshot from MD 'thinks' they're less desirable, so what! The fact is the claws are likely missing on purpose, as there's a great market for 'JUST' claw meat.
Floridians prize them, and certainly there should be several included in a batch of crabs or they should be advertised as such.
There's no fault in preparation of the crabs, and in fact I prefer MD style for the most part. However aside from steamed crabs (blue, snow, and king are all done well), I've found this restaurant to be sub-par. Shrimp is overdone, sides are pathetic. These folks can't even serve a decent piece of corn on the cob. EVERY time we've been it's the same soggy mess that should embarrass any conscientious restauranteur.
I give these guys a 'very good' rating on simply prepared crab alone. It's a crabhouse, afterall. So go for the crab (NOT crabcakes, anyone who's had real MD lump crabcakes knows theirs are inferior) and order a salad & maybe a few hushpuppies. Don't waste your time on thoughtless sides like corn, baked potato, etc..they aren't worth eating.
Oh my God! Best I've had!.
I've eaten in a lot of restaurants all over the world and this place is as good as any. It doesn't have the flamboyance of high dollar restaurants but for a really, I mean really, good meal for a decent price..... I've not found any better.
Most people get on the internet to bash a place they didn't like and I understand this. People that were happy don't bother. A customer with bad service only tells me that one server was bad for that one customer. She may be wonderful the next day.
Our party of 6 had really good service. He was prompt and not intrusive. Our food was top quality and prepared the way we requested. Surprisingly, I didn't think the hushpuppies from Calabash, N.C. could be topped until I tasted their's. They were fantastic. Our entire party was very pleased.
Highly recommend the Blue Crab.
Finest crabhouse in the area..
I laughed as I read the review by spy5354 claiming this and that about a real crabhouse. First, any crab connoisseur knows that crabs frequently come out of the water missing their claws. Second, any crab connoisseur knows the claw meat is the least desirable meat and many of us don't bother with the claws. Third, he/she was SO dissappointed in the crabs he/she ordered another dozen after the first. Go figure.
My family ran crabhouses in MD. for years and since moving to Jax in 2003 I've found the crabs at the Blue Crab, as well as their crab cakes, to be as good as any back home. That's why we love going there at least 4 times a month. I recommend them to all my friends.
This is the e-mail I sent to the owners of the restaurant tonight:
We appreciate that the food was fresh and very prompt. I have one major concern. I was appalled by how uncaring you and your staff were when I brought up the problem with the crabs missing their claws. In a real Maryland crabhouse, the server will always replace any unsatisfactory crab (lightweight, missing legs or claws, sickly color, the customer thinks it has bad karma, whatever the issue). Our server told us that "they don't guarantee the crabs will come with all the claws." That felt like being told that I wasn't guaranteed to get a top bun with my hamburger. I was especially annoyed that when I pointed this out to the owner, she tried to change the subject by telling me that the crabs take off their own claws when they go into the [steamer]. In any crabhouse, the crabs come with all of their claws, whether they are attached to the crab or not. We paid over $84 for our meal tonight, and nine of the crabs in our first dozen were missing one or both claws, I guess we got lucky with the second half-dozen because only one was missing a claw.
I hope you'll rethink your policy for future guests... If you wish to continue attracting new business, I suggest you impress future guests into writing you better reviews. You could start by ensuring that the entire crab makes it to the table.
Great crab shack..
Our neighbors told us about this place and said to try the mushroom appetizer. We were 4 adults and we got an order of the crab stuffed mushrooms and shrimp cocktail. The mushrooms were so good we ordered more.
Our friends had the steamed crabs and said they were just like they remembered in Maryland. Old Bay seasoning on them and they came with a basket of fries. They loved them. My hubby had blackened fish and I had the stuffed crab, which was a crab meat mixture baked in 2 shells. It was wonderful. And the baked potato was huge. I hate it when you only get a potato the size of a golf ball.
We were very happy and really liked the place. We would reccomment it to our friends.
If you want seafood, this is it! An authentic crab house with everything you'd expect.. This is our favorite place to eat whenever we are in the Jacksonville area. Very casual and comfortable with the best blue crabs and crablegs (snow, dungeness, and king). They have a crabmeat stuffed mushrooms appetizer that is out of this world, best by far of any I've ever had. Good service and kids love it because they can write on the walls. Expect a wait list on weekend nights at busy times. They also have outdoor dining on a covered deck.
A great little restaurant!. A real Mom and Pop place where the people are so friendly and the seafood is all fresh. It's a bit hard to find but well worth it. It's Maryland style crabs with brown paper table cloths and plenty of local favorite dishes too. The dinners are priced between $10 and $20 for a great value.
