Meh. Was again in Mandarin for the occasional meal with the wife and came across this restaurant. We were one of two other patrons in the restaurant and now I know why. The food is bland, came cold, and service is nil. Wait staff is not very friendly. I will admit that I am not an Indian food expert, but have been around. Food didn't fit my palate and I wouldn't eat here again. Dark, dank and unfriendly. Not very inviting. Bye.
The seductive scents of curries lure in visitors, who stay for the fresh food and friendly service..
The Scene
Tucked away in a shopping center on San Jose Boulevard, India Gate promises to be a wonderfully aromatic experience. The pungent smells of garam masala, cumin and cinnamon assure a lively meal at the hands of the Indian couple who own the restaurant. The servers wear traditional Indian attire and are patient with your questions about levels of spiciness, seasonings and terminology.
The Food
Nibble on a few crunchy pappadum wafers accompanied by a zippy red pepper coulis. Tandoori specialties, like the chicken, tinted red and brought to the table straight from the brick oven are deliciously tender. Curries are equally as succulent with varying levels of spice and flavor. Vegetarian dals are always creamy and golden. The food is fresh and satisfying while the portions promise to leave you sated.
I'm sorry!. The service is super friendly, and I love the little booths, so I feel a bit guilty for saying that I think thier food is too greasy and that India's Restaurant is much better, especially the Chicken Tikka Masala, which is my favorite meal on earth!
The Best Indian Cuisine in Town. I have fallen in love with Indian food over the past few years, and when I moved to Jacksonville 2 years ago, was dissappointed with the local "fare". I had tried some of the area Indian restaurants and was rather underwhelmed. Then, I stumbled upon India Gate and the rest was history. The food is very fresh and flavorful. The selections are endless, and everything I have tried has lived up to my expectations. My only complaint is that the Mushroom Masala I had on my first visit is not a regular menu item. It was magnificent.
