Great service great food, don't much care that it's not authentic
First timer – Had the Egg Plant parm. The small was plenty for two. Can't remember what it was called but also had tomatoes with cheese and olive oil. Everything was very good. Server was outstanding. I Loved the pictures as some were very funny. I will go back!
Why I will never go back. – I made a reservation for four for 7 PM, I arrived a few minutes early and checked with the hostess to make sure they had my reservation, they did. When the rest of our party arrived I let the hostess know that we were all there and ready when our table was. We were seated shortly, well most of us were. We were taken to the farthest room from the front door, to a space that literally required the guests at the next table to stand to allow us room to get to one side of our table. Our table for four had three chairs, to which the seating hostess replied “I will be right back with a chair for you”, when we left after 9 pm, yes it took that long for the meal, she or no one else on the staff had ever brought a chair. The guests at the table that had been put out to move for us gave us the spare from their table with a wish of good luck that our service was better than theirs had been, it wasn’t. We then waited 20 minutes for the first visit from our waiter by that time we had picked out our meal; we ordered the drinks, appetizer, and salad then. 20 more minutes when he came back with the drinks, that is 40 minutes from setting down to the worst table in the house, after having made a reservation, to get a drink, he rechecks our order making it obvious to me that it had not been placed with the kitchen. This was proven true later when all the food arrives with in 5 minutes of each other. Some of the other highlights include having to ask for a fourth set of silverware only to be told that the restaurant was out of knives. They were out of clean plates too, judging by the dirty dinner plates that were delivered to us, after we asked for them of course.
Disappointed – Wasn't expecting a gourmet meal by any stretch but both me and my wife were disappointed with the taste of the food.
Good southern Italian – This is good if you're dying for southern italian dishes and need someting close. I grew up near a 'little italy' and we have nothing even close in jax fl, but this comes as close as it gets. Bucca is a chain but tastes better than most chains i've been to.
Not for European Italians.... – ....but I returned once and maybe more in the future.
I am new to the area and originally Italian so the first thing I do in a new city is to explore the dining scene.
Beppo's does not serve authentic Italian food but to do so would require flying in the ingredients on a daily basis. Placing my Italian palate aside I was able to enjoy some of the dishes and learn to stay clear of some other ones. On average nothing overly pleasing and nothing offensive.
For a casual dining excursion it is a good place to visit with attentive service albeit higher prices than the food warrants.
Get cozy with friends and family and enjoy an Italian feast at this loved-by-locals restaurant. – In Short
Homesick for your mother's Italian cooking? Grab your appetite and head to this restaurant, where the friendly wait staff will serve up portions of Colosseum-esque proportions, like spaghetti and meatballs loaded with savory tomato sauce and lots of pungent garlic. Dishes center on Southern Italian immigrant fare, and are meant to be shared family-style with a large goblet of wine-to enhance the taste, of course. The ornate décor with walls covered in vintage photos evokes a warm homey feel that welcomes customers to dine among the other families and loyal customers. Buon Appetito!
Closest Thing To Italian That I Have Ever Tasted – Ok, so I understand the debate over true Italian and not true Italian. Here are my feelings on that subject. Unless you are from the old country or your mom is just one generation away from it, are you really going to know what true Italian really tastes like? What I do know is that I have eaten at Buca's several times and have never had a bad meal or bad service. I have eaten at the one in Pittsburgh and the one in Jax and found the same service and quality. I may not know true Italian food, but I do know good food and that's what you will find at Buca's. I recommend you go with another couple and take advantage of the family style eating "Mix-n-Match" and have a great time.
Chains...What a Shame – Dave,
Mr. Restaurant Reviewer. You wouldn't know Italin food if it bit you you on your rump. "They import everything., because I asked. " Dave, did you know there is no such thing as American olive oil. All olive oil is imported. They do not make olive oil in America. Once again, the locals, who seem to be astonished with chain restaurants, simply are afraid to try an authentic ethnic menu. Jacksonville grows, but never grows up. These chain "restaurants" mass produce thier sauces, pastas and so called improted meats and fish. The result is a bland ,under spiced dish that appeals to the masses.....such as yourself. There is truly no difference between Olive Garden, Buca, and Carrabas. Do yourself a favor and take this recomendation and try an authemtic Italian Restaurant, owned by Italians, cooked by Italians and has been in business for 22 years. The name....Vito's on Baymeadows Rd., just off of San jose Blvd. Then you will truly know Italian food. Of course, the extra few bucks, might be too much on your budget. You next date might appreciate the added taste of true Italian food.
Wow this place is excellent! – I was worried to go to "chain restaurant", but that was washed away upon walking in the door!
I took the tour with my girlfriend through the kitchen (who would dare that anymore!?!) was seated comfortably and the rest was perfect history.
The food: as authentic as I can figure, some of the best Italian I've ever had and I am from N.Y. I know they import important ingredients such as oils, vinegars, meats and olives, because I asked.
If you are here looking because you would like to know, look no more, just go. I've never gone at night and didn't need to reserve a seat, but according to others you may want to to be safe, enjoy! I did.
Buca's is family style service and dining. You litteraly feel like they are family. They have an excellent service standard.
