I had never purchased a roof before, and Matthew at Gates Roofing Empire was so helpful. I had gotten several roofing estimates and Gates Roofing was the best estimate. They offered a excellent warranty that made me feel at ease as this is a major purchase. Matthew Gates was there for me when I had questions and his workers were neat and did a great job on my roof. I could not of asked for a better company to do my roof. I recommend Gates Roofing to anyone who is looking for a new roof.

Do Not Trust Him

Do not trust Matthew Gates- rented our home to him and his family. From the very beginning he bounced his checks- gave him the benefit of the doubt and didn't want to put his family out on the street- had not paid rent since June and we still gave him the benefit of the doubt and did not evict him. Finally in November after never fulfilling his promises to make good- we started the eviction process- still not making the Official Notice until after Christmas. He moved his family out and destroyed our house. Trash and garbage everywhere- filled tubs and sinks with water and trash, left food rotting in fridge, damaged carpet s and scratched up hardwood floors, damaged walls and molding- personal used toiletry items on floor in bathroom, garbage and cigarette butts in microwave, burning cigar in closet, broken light fixtures hanging by wires, missing fixtures and smoke detectors, filth everywhere-inside and outside of the house. We were very gracious with this family because they had 3 young children and even though they were hurting us by not paying the rent, we understood the challenges of the economy and that familes are going thru a hard time. We gave them chance after chance to get back on their feet and make good- but in return, they not only don't pay-but destroy our home to "thank us" for our graciousness. I just don't understand how people can treat other people that way. His wife Heather will cry a sad tune as well- but she is no better than he is. Watch out for these people because they have no intention of doing the right thing, just how far they can get by using and stealing from other people.

Matthew Gates is a disgrace to roofers

Matthew Gates is not even a licensed contractor, and after paying him a good chunk of money, he essentially disappeared and left piles of trash and others to finish the job and clean up the mess he made. My home was left with exposed siding and attic spaces, broken windows, and debris for over 8 months. He strung me along for a good few months with his lies and excuses. If you don't want to find yourself in the horrible situation I got in - go with another company. Check out Matthew Samuel Gates' civil and criminal cases in Duval and St. John's counties if you want to see for yourself what kind of person he is. Check out the BBB's complaints on him. Avoid him or you could find yourself like the homeowners that now have a liens on their homes because he failed to pay his suppliers. Maybe your work (if it gets done) won't be permitted either because guess what? He is not LICENSED!! He has no professional accountability to any government or licensing authority, enabling him to essentially screw people over without recourse. Oh - except for that one time Neptune Beach police arrested him for forging a homeowner's signature for a work permit. Gates physical addresses and phone numbers seem to change frequently too. Maybe he is at 823 Ponte Vedra Blvd. Who knows? I thought I was going with an honest reputable company because there were no complaints online, but I was wrong and am posting as much warning as I can to others to avoid Gates. Don't take my word for it either - the data about him available online paints a sufficient picture. And to the person who claims Gates did a fantastic job, either you are one of the very few lucky ones out there, or as big of a liar as he is.

Stay away from Gates Roofing Empire - $9,000 New Roof Original and new leak exists

Glad to read the other reviews ... And my research is the same. Shifty Credential, Moved locations mulitple times and now...the have no storefront and just an answering service. No address to send correspondence to. Lots of excuses about getting out to do warrantte work...and then you just don't get them to return your calls. I will also be persuing the legal route...perhaps we can all consider a CLASS ACTION SUITE! I am also sending pictures of their fine work to the licensing board ...

If you are crazy enough to deal with these folks...don't pay them in full until you see evidence of the final inspection (provided they even pull a permit). And inspect your roof from the rafters before you let them leave the premises.

Also, don't pay for additional warantees...you can't get them to return to your home ... or find them by phone or mail...once they roll out of your driveway.
